Legion wrestling attended there first British Seniors and had a heavy task ahead of them. They had attended with the Aim of competing in both Greco-Roman and Freestyle Wrestling. We had lost a few of our wrestlers to ill Health and unfortunate circumstance (3 of which were top 2 of their weight categories) but never the less we had a strong team.

We had gained 2 silvers (Beckhan aldamov in 66kg, and Amir Kanjani in 74kg) and 2 bronze (Abdurahim Hibeel in 96kg and Nate Higgins in 74kg) in freestyle, As well as 2 gold in Greco-Roman (Vladimir Trofim in 84kg, and Gaga Adeshivili in 60kg) and 3 silvers in Greco-Roman (Roman Sickho 74kg, and Aydin Mallender 84kg, and Freddy Brown 66kg) and 1 Bronzes in Greco-Roman (Billy Vasilius at 84kg). In total we gained 2 Gold’s, 5 Silvers and 3 Bronzes. We would like to thank all the wrestlers who had Competed and made great effort to prepare for the British Seniors (even though we only ahd 3 weeks to prepare), the coaches who made the effort and time to be there, and the camera man and the guys who drove us there and put up with our tiresome antics. We are now preparing the juniors for the English Juniors in May we hope you will support us.

After parting ways from former partner at TEAM USB, Head Coach Amir Eslami launched Legion Wrestling. By Gods Grace, whilst with TEAM USB, the club was very successful. Since starting as Legion Wrestling, the new club is continuing to flourish. Head Coach Amir has been wrestling for over 20 years and coaching for 15. He has been teaching at various venues around London and had settled with TEAM USB at Leytonstone Community Sports Centre. Thereafter, Coach Amir made the decision to take on a new project and open Legion Fitness Education Centre (LFEC), so Legion Wrestling has now moved to it’s current venue on Wellington Road. We aim to make a community based centre offering a variety of martial arts, with our specialty being Olympic Wrestling, catering for single gender classes for those who want keep fit as well as for performance athletes. The aim is to improve the health of the local community by educating them about a healthy lifestyle coupled with a balanced diet.

Two professional coaches are already in place and FILA will send at its own expenses one or two more coaches if necessary.

The countries wishing to send wrestlers to the Doha Training Center must contact the Qatar Wrestling Federation through its President, Mr. Zamel Sayyaf Al-Shahrani, who was instrumental to this success ( QAT@fila-wrestling.com).

The annual Refereeing Department meeting took place in London on 07 December 2011 before the test event for the 2012 Olympics. The Department members reviewed the videos of all challenges requested in 2011 in view of sanctioning the referees and jury members at fault. All international referees were also assessed upon analysis of the competition reports submitted by the neutral referees and Instructors thougout the year. The categories for 2012 can be consulted under the section “Referees”. The Department proceeded with the appointment of the Olympic referees for 2012 and brought the list to 66 referees, Instructors included (consult the list). The last chance to qualify for the 60 referees who will officiate during the Games will be during the 2012 senior European Championship.

FILA congratulates all referees for their work and encourages all National Federations to continue sending referees to the candidate and promotion courses in order to increase the number of qualified referees around the world and thus guarantee a sound supervision of our sport.

The coaches both gave thanks to the parents of the children who attend our wrestling classes as without them and their continued support, we would be nowhere. We hope we are truly deserving of such an award and hope to continue to meet the local communities expectations or even better, surpass them.

With a new venue on the cards for 2012 with a purpose fitted matted room, as well as sauna and weights & cardio gym, we hope to open up the Legion Fitness Education Centre, where people can go to learn about their bodies and how to look after their health, via a wide range of classes and GP fitness consultations.

Keep us in your prayers and watch this space!

On Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th December 2011, the Olympic Test Event took place at the Excel Centre in London.

The London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games (LOCOG) and FILA were solely responsible for the organisation of this event. They have invited a select group of the world best athletes to compete in the Olympic weight classes and have also offered Legion Wrestling a limited number of places.

66kgs – Bec-khan Aldamov
‘v’ Russia Bye
‘v’ Japan Lost: 0-1 5-2 (link)
Repechage
‘v’ Mongolia Won: 3-0; 5-0 (link) Bronze/6

Bec-khan had a bye in first round. In the semi-finals, he wrestled Tanaka from Japan. It was a close match. Tactically, Bec-khan wrestled well, coming out the narrow loser on points. But he equipped himself in a positive fashion.

In the repechage, Bec-khan gave a good controlled performance in which he took his opportunities well and executed a good high altitude throw to score a 5 point move which ended the contest.

For his first outing in international competition, Bec-kham approached the matches mentally, tactically and technically very well and he can hopefully build on this experience for future.

FILA is about to experience an important step in its Olympic calendar with the organisation of the wrestling test event for the 2012 London Olympic Games. The competition is intended as a rehearsal before the grand opening of the London Olympics in eight months and it will have to prove that all aspects pertaining to the logistic and volunteers are fully under control. 196 athletes representing 31 countries were invited by the Organising Committee (LOCOG) to take part in this prestigious event that will be held at ExCel Centre on 10-11 December 2011 (consult the programme). The pressure on Daniel Robin’s shoulders (wrestling competition manager) and his team is considerable and FILA wishes for this competition to run without any flaws.

The test event will also be the occasion for the annual meeting of the Refereeing Department that will go over the international referees’ work throughout 2011 in view of their promotion or demotion. At the end of the meeting, the referees’ categories for 2012 will be available for consultation on the FILA website. The Refereeing Department will also update the Olympic referee list for 2012 and appoint the delegates for next year’s competitions. All Olympic referees were invited by LOCOG to take part in a two-day course held on 08-09 December in order to guarantee the utmost quality of their work during the test event.
